Routemaster replacements
This is the real reason why the loss of the Routemaster is such a shame. Buses get withdrawn. But what we have lost with the Routemaster, beyond its appealing curves, is the tradition of designing and building buses fit for the needs of Londoners.

Double-deckers using Mill Lane
The 139 route finishes at West End Green. At the end of the day, the buses use Mill Lane to get to their garage in Cricklewood.
The campaigners say Mill Lane is too small for double-deckers. There's been damage to trees, unnecessary noise and pollution for residents, and traffic hold-ups - particularly at the end of Mill Lane where the buses have to turn right into Shoot-Up Hill.
You can support their campaign here.

Goodbye, Routemaster

Routemaster, Finchley Road
Originally uploaded by Grievous Angel.
An icon of London is about to disappear from our local landscape. We're talking about the Routemaster bus, a design classic and a symbol of London for more than 50 years. The Routemaster was the last and best bus purpose-designed and purpose-built for Londoners.
The number 13 bus route to the West End will cease to be operated by the Routemaster for the last time on 21st October. The 13 route is one of the last three routes still to be operated by the Routemaster. All will convert to modern buses by the end of the year.
The Routemaster, of course, used to run through West End Lane on the 139 route and contributed to that indefinable sense of West Hampstead being a London village. If you want to catch your last chance to ride it and - if you're lucky - experience the welcoming hand of a helpful conductor, you'll need to walk to the top of West End Lane where the Routemaster runs up and down the Finchley Road.
