Now open

Tesco, West End Lane

West Hampstead's new Tesco store finally opened on West End Lane. And it's been doing very brisk business as far as I can tell.

Yes, there's been huge queues when I've been in. I think that's more of a reflection on how dire the corner shops are around here though - I'm not a Tescos fan but I find myself going in there because they're polite and friendly and you can find what you want.

I am grateful for Tescos opening here, because the biggest convenience shop, Best One, is an absolute ripoff (they tried to sell me 6 stamps at 50p each).

But I was surprised how much junk Tescos are selling, with hardly any space used for fresh fruit and veg, no fresh fish at all, and far too much crisps, soft drink and ready meals - including sandwiches which are a comlete waste of time in such a cafe-saturated area.

Maybe they open a standard configuration, then alter it later once it becomes clear what is in demand.

I agree with JR. The choice of products in the new Tesco Express is pretty poor when it comes to fresh food, particularly in terms of fish and poultry. The aisles of shelving given over to crisps, drinks and confectionary seem disproportionate when compared with the half a shelf that has been allocated to fresh meat.

I think the layout of the Hampstead Tesco Express provides a good example of how a local convenience store should be stocked so hopefully the West End Lane store represents a work in progress.

That said, I am pleased that I will never again have to resort to buying over-priced washing powder in Best One.

it's definitely a work in progress for the reasons stated; the range of fresh food does need improving.

however it hopefully brings forward the day best one goes bankrupt. that site would make an ideal sainsbury's.

hopefully then we'll have some competition between proper supermarkets/shops, not overpriced rip off merchant corner shops.

none of this should impact at all on the decent delis and similar in west hampstead, but the likes of best one, atlanta etc. are disgraceful businesses and i really hope they're days are numbered.

I concur. Atlanta Food & Wine and best-one's days are numbered.
When the idea of a Tesco store surfacing on West End Lane was published in the Ham & High all those months ago there was an enormous amount of negative comments made on various forums. However, it's proved to be extremely popular and I think it demonstrates just how much room for improvement there is on West End Lane. When the aforementioned shops close, lets hope we'll get some quality replacements. Which brings me to my question; What shops would you like to see in West Hampstead? All feedback is welcome.

The trouble with West End Lane is that the shops tend to be too narrow. Nandos and Strada are successful because they can cater for more than 6 customers at a time.
Cafe Rouge in Hampstead is a good example of how to utilize space. It's set over two floors and allows for seating outside.
There are too many estate agents.
Those tiny square pavement slabs are hideous too. They could do with replacing.
Also, when is the train station going to get the long awaited overhaul? Does anyone know?

Yes brilliant! Can M&S Food buy out Best one please....

Well, A P Foods opposite the Thameslink station has just gone bust, presumably because of Tesco's. Excellent news.

Hopefully M&S Simply Foods, Sainsbury's or someone can take over that site. Ideal location opposite the station. Whatever takes over that site will be an improvement; too many of these rubbish businesses have been making just enough money to survive for far too long. Those days are now over.

I am quite frankly scared of the comments left about T****s et al.

Sure some shops don't deserve to survive but to replace shops with a chain as soulless as T****s and to read the blogs that say they sell c*** but they still shop there is just wierd .

Talk to your local shops if you are not happy if you think the delis and shops that you regard are decent will survive you are mistaken .The reason they are selling the things thay do at the moment is to target Best one (which I agree is overpriced and the staff are sullen and Atlanta ( where the staff are kind and helpful . when they are gone then they will change their produce to target Gusto and love food.

If you want your house prices to go down and your high street to be the same as all the other high streets i th uk keep shopping at T****s.

well i'm glad you guys are happy and am astonished at the lack of dissenting voices.
I'm fed up with the way I can't safely take the children to school in the morning because the pavements are blocked left to right with delivery cages and the roads are blocked with big lorries contravening parking regulations.
