It is with irritating frequency that we find that one of these cards from the Royal Mail has been posted through out letter box when we've been at home to answer the door.
This particular card was posted last Saturday and, with the snow, there has been no sign of a delivery since.
Are we unusually prone to not hearing the doorbell when the postman calls? Or is it a common experience in the neighbourhood to receive a 'Sorry, you were out' card when you were in all along?
Update: In response to comments on this post, I've started tracking this issue on Google Maps. Please keep your experiences coming in.

Totally agree with you, Sherrif Road for me and its exactly the same.
Thanks for your comment. One of my neighbours has told me he has the same experience.
Woodchurch Rd here, and I have exactly the same trouble. I always get a red card, whether I am in or not. I suspect they just don't want to lug around bulky packages with them so they just give you a red card regardless and make you come and collect it instead.
Jonas, thanks. I've started logging these on Google Maps
Yes they have been doing this to me too for some time now, it's really annoying as I then have to wait 24 hours before collecting it and I can only do that if I can make it there between 7am-1pm (12pm on Saturday). Why are the opening hours so short? It's always really busy in there. The Hampstead (NW3) deliver office is (or was) open until 7pm.
You can request a redelivery online but that takes 48 hours.
What makes things worse is the fact that you can never get through to the Kilburn (NW6) Delivery/Sorting Office as they never answer the phone. By the way, if you do call them, make sure you call them on 020 7624 7676 instead of the 0845 number as you don't have to listen to an automated message before your call is put through, and it's cheaper.
I live at the bottom end of Broomsleigh (near the laneway) and this has also happened to me!
I work in one of the local shops, and not only does it happen to us, but they actually hand us these slips - and then run off as quickly as possible! Maddening.
Seems people in south-east London are having similar experiences:
"On one memorable occasion I opened the front door to find a guy in the middle of writing one of these cards to say that I wasn't in - when questioned, he said he didn't know which bell to ring. I pointed out the one with my name on it in block capital letters, and he scarpered."
Hello, this just happened to me as well. I actually caught the bloke putting the card through the letter box and he didn't even have the package with him! Ridiculous. I complained to the post office.
Some W Hampstead postmen are good though, the chaps who cover Honeybourne Rd are great, they always knock and always leave a card if no-one is in.
My case was so bad....
monday morning I found a calling card torn and left outdside a flat 5 doors away from mine.I just had my instinct so luckily I picked up those pieces of calling card and found my name on it!!I complained but they said because the most important part of the card was missing,so they can't do anything!?
Now not sure what to do.....
Compayne Gardens here - happens to us too.
And we also get 'regular' post for the same number as ours, but in Canfield Gardens. All our missing post is probably in Canfield!
You think that's bad - Our tenancy agreement arrived a few days ago, opened and with a burn whole through the middle of the envelope and all pages...
It has been fetured on bbc watchdog and nothing has been done about it. Has happened to me many times, today i called and explained to the post office staff memeber on the other end of the phone that I was in and would have heard the door to which he rather gruffly replied "well you didn't"... Staff "Member" seems a rather apropriate way of describing this unpleasant specimine on the other end of the phone.
What can we do?
The postal services are a disaster. They shame this country. The people who manage these businesses should be made to confess in public the awfulness of their efforts.
woodchurch road, happens all the time. nightmare
