Tesco is coming to West Hampstead
A Tesco convenience store is to open in West Hampstead. The pine shop Woods and Woods on West End Lane is currently holding a closing down sale. According to the Ham & High, the owner received an offer he couldn't refuse from Tesco - which plans to open a convenience store on the premises in the summer.

yay!
Christmas is not quite over!!!!! At last we will have something other than crappy corner shops and rip-off organic shops - How far away is summer!
I really welcome this addition to West End Lane. I'm fed up of having to visit either extortionately priced organic food shops or pay for overpriced substandard fruit and veg in local convenience stores. These stores are often themselves part of large chains and perhaps this introduction will mean they will become more competitve rather than hold a monopoly over West End shoppers.
I am also really pleased-at last some real food without having to drive or take the bus. There are about a million lousy cafes and convenience stores in West Hampstead and literally nothing to eat! Will be good for the old and sick also to be able to buy fresh food on their doorstep, instead of being perpetually robbed of their meagre pensions.
Do you people even know what tesco as a company are doing to members of villages like west hampstead all over the country? Did you know that while they promoting their brand image as the best supermarket ever they are working in direct opposition to those trying to enforce fair trade leaving farmers and suppliers all over the world with no little or no income at all that's even if they allow these farmers to keep their busineses. If you find it hard to empathise think of our neighbours in hampstead. Hundreds of years of heritage through the hampstead food hall lost and all because these hearltess corporate giants wanted to replace a local landmark and wack up yet another blue and red sign. Yuck! It might surprise you to know that i am not a hippy nor am i a political activist, i'm an 18 year old girl who loves make up and fashion and for a subject that would cause most to roll their eyes this is something that is seriously concerning the youth of local areas just like west hampstead.
I bet you didn't know there are plans to put tesco local in the new fortune green developement as well.
Please think twice before lining these shareholders pockets and robbing those who work so hard to provide you with your morning coffee and fresh smoothies.
I love west hampstead it's my home and always will be i'd hate to wake up one day in Tesco land.
Tesco Express is not needed in West Hampstead, there is enough corner shops already!
i completely agree with anonymous 2-west hampstead is special because it's not about high-street chains it's about being individual and special. if you can't find inexpensive foods in the hundreds of corner shop you're not a very good west hampstedite!
Hurrah!
I hope those best-one crooks will be closed down within 2 weeks!
Who would ever shop there are pay twice the price for everything with their gray goods and mouldy rotting fruit and veg!
It no time at all all these completely shitty stores will close up and some good shops might open, maybe even a Waitrose of something!
Thats the only reason I have a car so I can drive to Tesco at Brent Cross! Now I can get rid of it.
DUmb green moron luddites! Now I can get rid of my car and save the rainforest!
I love you Tesco! Screw you best-one. 2 pounds 50 for tobasco sauce! 1.50 for a can of beans! God I hope they stay open 24 hours.
This is really aazing news. All 3 of the corner shops will close to make way for some nice stores, hell, maybe even a sainsburys or something.
I don't even want to jinx it but please god bring us a M&S.
People dont realise that this will fundamentally change this hood. It is really likely to start climbing upmaarket as a lot of shitty shops and charity stores close down and higher end ones will be able to take their place.
OH I AM SO HAPPY!!
I accept many of the arguments about anonymous high streets full of chain shops, and about the problems with brands driving out independent retailers.
But that doesn't really apply in west hampstead in my view, because the quality of the opposition (am not talking about the deli's/organic shops, some of which are good, rather the overpriced, poor quality, awful corner shops (especially Best One which doesn't deserve to be in business) is so poor.
If shops like Best One had been exposed to decent competition they wouldn't have survived so long, and hopefully Tesco's coming in will lead to rubbish like that place closing down.
Would rather it was a waitrose, sainsbury's or M&S food to be honest but nobody can say West Hampstead doesn't have the need for a chain supermarket, as will be proved by how busy it will be.
